Oh, and I've thought, every time we sing it out of the contemporary Catholic hymnal, how sad that modern "cleansers" have rewritten "the slave is our brother" and taken the meaning out of it! And how interesting to learn that the controversy began right at the outset. I couldn't agree more with your conclusion that "there is only one honest response."
