Greg, thank you for posting this. You have no idea how timely. I am about to launch my Substack, which is about the "word" ... the words in the Word ... and the first one is "Suffering." I've been sharing my prayer insights with my prayer group and pastor for almost two years now, since my spiritual director, on his deathbed, whispered to me, "Suffering is good." Trying to answer my unspoken question "How can that be?" and encountering so many people who believe that suffering is an evil that must be eradicated, the Lord has led me to conclude (as my 8th grade English teacher might have said) that the problem may be one of grammar and root meaning, of a 16th century English word that no longer means what it meant when Bible translators chose it. Suffer, my spiritual director told me, is a verb, not a thing. It's what we do, or choose not to do, to get us through the things that afflict us. It is built on hope, on the faith of Jeremish 29:11, on the lyric, "At the end of the storm is a golden sky ... "

Your post is fantastic. A godsend, for sure. Thank you.
